Happy New Year from Violet & Vine! We thought we'd reflect on 2021 and how life has been as a Lincolnshire wedding florist.
We only had one wedding in March 2020 then had many postponed weddings, most of which we managed to fit in amongst our weddings planned for 2021. This meant that last year was our busiest yet, despite our first wedding being in May.
It was also a year of many firsts like our arch arrangement for a lych gate (a gateway covered with a roof found at the entrance to a traditional English churchyard), our huge and very heavy hoop for a tipi and our Indian wedding garlands.
We feel so lucky to have been able to dress so many beautiful and stunning venues again last year such as Doddington Hall, Aswarby Rectory, Pheasantry Brewery, Scrivelsby Walled Garden, Washingborough Hall, The Carriage Hall and Prestwold Hall. There have been some beautiful old churches too. It always feels like such a privilege to spend some quiet time in these lovely spaces and there is such a buzz in the air before the celebrations begin.
We bought many of our seasonal flowers from our local flower farm, Old Farmhouse Flowers and some of our flowers from Holland but increasingly turned to our own gardens and raised beds last year. We also turned to the hedgerows quite a lot, particularly for wreath, swag and hoop making.
We have from the beginning been huge advocates of sustainability, re-using and re-purposing wherever possible and many of our couples have helped by returning glass and plastic containers and by hiring containers from us. Last year we also made a few additional changes in our bid to become more eco friendly such as using wool blocks or moss and chicken wire instead of floral foam.
We worked with so many lovely couples last year and felt honoured to be chosen to help them bring their floral ideas to life and to be a part of their day. We have had many laughs with our couples and tears too - we are a very emotional pair!
We finished the year with our festive wreath workshops and it was so lovely to have past and future couples join us. Everyone had fun and found the sessions to be good pre-Christmas therapy and the general consensus was that we should do them more often. Watch this space.
And so it all begins again for 2022. This week we have begun our consultations for initial and catch up chats and are looking through our seed packets and catalogues and doing the very difficult job of trying to narrow down what we choose to sow. There will be a few old favourites and old faithfuls but I’m sure we won’t be able to resist some new ones too. But that’s a whole other blogpost….
